History
Chongqing Baigongguan is located in Gele Mountain, Shapingba District. It has a unique historical background, originally being the suburban villa of Sichuan warlord Bai Ju. However, in 1938, the Kuomintang’s Military Intelligence Bureau transformed it into a prison, beginning a dark history. From then on, this originally cozy place was reduced to hell on earth.
Harsh Prison Environment
Chongqing Baigongguan is not large, but its interior is complex. The cells were small, dimly lit and very humid, creating an extremely harsh environment. Many patriots and revolutionary martyrs were illegally imprisoned and brutally persecuted. Among them, the most famous were the patriotic anti-Japanese general Huang Xiansheng, and the family of Song Zhenzhong, better known as “Little Carrot Head”. Little Carrot Head was imprisoned with his parents when he was eight months old, and spent a short but tragic life in prison.
The Tragic Massacre
On the eve of the victory of the Liberation War, the reactionaries of the Kuomintang carried out a frantic massacre of the revolutionaries imprisoned in the White House, creating the shocking “11-27” massacre tragedy. Countless heroes bravely sacrificed their lives for the founding of New China. This tragic event is a dark stain on history, but at the same time it also bears witness to the unwavering spirit of the martyrs.
A place of remembrance and education
Today, Chongqing Baigongguan has become a national key cultural relics protection unit and a patriotic education base. It is a vivid witness to that heavy history, and a constant reminder that people, no matter which country they come from, should cherish the hard-won peace and freedom today. For foreigners who come to visit Bai Gong Gong, it is a unique window into the history of the Chinese Revolution, showcasing the sacrifices made by the Chinese people in pursuit of a new era. Every year, a large number of domestic and foreign tourists come to honor the martyrs by walking into the cells and strolling along the corridors in an attempt to feel the indomitable spirit of the revolutionary forefathers. This place not only honors the past, but also inspires future generations to strive for a better world.
All in all, Chongqing Baigongguan is not only a historical site, but also a symbol of the Chinese people’s pursuit of freedom and justice. It invites everyone to look back at history, learn from it and cherish the present.
